Do I need to renew an old green card issued in 1983? Recently at the U.S. entry point, the immigration officer reminded me that my old green card issued in 1983 would expire in a couple of years. When exactly will it expire? If it does, how and when do I apply for a renewal? Is the procedure any different from the renewal for the ones with 10-year limit? Will the local Homeland Security Office send me a notice for renewal in advance or do I have to file voluntarily? |

USCIS had proposed a rule that all permanent residents who hold a Permanent Resident card (green card) that does not have an expiration date to get a new green card. These green cards were issued between 1977 and 1989. Green Cards issued before 1977 have been revoked already. It is best advised to get the card replaced to avoid delays in receiving the new card. You can file form I-90 to get the card replaced.
