The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services provides exceptions to the English Language Requirement. For example, those who have been in the United States for 20 years as a Permanent Resident, and are age 50 or older at the time of filing for naturalization, or have lived in the country for 15 years as a Permanent Resident, and are 55 or older, are exempt from the English Language Requirement. For those so exempted, the test can be taken in their native tongue.

I hope this clarifies the matter for you. Thank you for using WebAnswers as your source.

The immigration test is in three parts. One part is where the examiner asks questions about U.S. History, called the civics test. Another part is a reading test and a final part is a writing test.

All of the possible questions for the civics test, as well as a list of all the possible words that you will need to read and write are available for you to study for free on the USCIS website. www.uscis.gov

As mentioned previously, if you meet the 50/20 (50+ years old and 20+ years with a green card) or 55/15 (55+ years old and 15+ years with a green card) rules you will be able to test in your own language. In both these cases the civics test is still required and they prefer it in English.

If you meet the requirements to test in your native language, USCIS requires you to bring your own interpreter.

Hope this helps and good luck to you (or whoever you have asked the question for) on the test! My husband is currently studying for it now, but is still a little nervous because of the English requirement. One of our dear friends just passed it last week, and said it really wasn't too bad. I think it is one of those things you just have to jump in and try during a moment that you have your nerve up.

The national average pass percentage rate (92%) shows the test is relatively easy.

Answer 6/8 - Submitted 3/12/2012

Yes, in order to take the citizenship immigration test, you have to speak English. The citizenship naturalization exam is only administered in English and you must know how to speak and write it properly in order to answer the writen and oral questions.

Answer 7/8 - Submitted 3/12/2012

Yes, you do have to be able to speak and write in English in order to pass the immigration citizen naturalization exam. The only people that do not need to speak or write English in order to take and pass the immigration citizenship exam are those people who are 60 or older.

Answer 8/8 - Submitted 3/12/2012
