Is there a way to check out an immigration attorney to see the ratio of cases he has won?

We, as Americans, have a husband (31 years) and a Dad (24 years) that was deported back to New Zealand in 2005 after being convicted of an aggrevated felony (involving drugs) in a plea bargin in 1981. We want to try and get a visa? or any re-entry with the help of an attorney. We have been told to do our homework before picking one and don't know how to accomplish this? Please help us to spend the little money we have wisely. He is our only family and I need to have a 3rd open-heart surgery soon. We understand the difficulties we are up against.

Is an attorney that was an immigration judge an asset? Also is getting an attorney in Washington DC going to help as we have been told?

I'm confused: they made a plea bargain in 1981 and avoided their deportation for another 23 years until they caught up with them and sent them back 5 years ago?

Yes that is correct! He was released after serving 4 1/2 months at a minimum security prison because someone posted a $20,000 bond in 1982. Also he left the country in 2000 to visit his parents and was allowed to re-enter the US!

He was not hiding....had several businesses, homes and even a SS card. We had excellent credit all in his name. The neighbor called the police over a problem with our cat and his birds and a routine check showed thAT HE (MY HUSBAND) WAS DEPORTED IN 1989 WHEN HE FAILED TO SHOW UP FOR HIS DEPORTATION HEARING THAT HE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT. We have just found out that the hearing notice was sent to the correct address but with the WRONG CITY and ZIP

That certainly complicates things, and you're correct you're going to have to find an extremely good lawyer to get a waiver. You may do better to focus on just one of them due to your medical hardship. Each of them will have their own case, you won't be able to treat this as a 2 for 1 deal.

This is just one person here that has been deported...my husband and my only daughter's father. Sounds like you think I am referring to 2 people?
