What major changes occurred in immigration law since 1986 I was an active Chicago immigration lawyer until 1986, took a hiatus to become school teacher, and now have reactivated in Arizona. A non-profit organization needs a specialist, and I need a refresher to cover the 14 years I missed. |

Honestly, tons of stuff has happened - too much for an overview here. Best bet is to join AILA for the updates, message boards, etc. You may also want to pick up an updated Kurzban's sourcebook - the best in-a-nutshell guide out there.
I can tell you it's become much harder - no more 245i to repair lapses in status/long bars for unlawful presence so once out of status, often no way to fix it here OR by going abroad to process. Strict limits on judicial review. Harsher penalties. Tougher to get visas for employment, with more and more requirements and fees layered on the H-1B. A "culture of no" at USCIS.
